As the Raindance Film Festival prepares to welcome another slate of independent voices from around the world, one of this year’s most intriguing narrative features is Cowboy, the latest film from writer-director-star Nathan Grubbs.

Set against the backdrop of the American South, Cowboy follows Juno, a war veteran struggling to rebuild his life after returning home. Alongside his friend Mo, Juno survives through small-time robberies and risky schemes until a final job goes disastrously wrong. After serving a prison sentence, he returns to confront the consequences of his past and seeks forgiveness from the people he hurt along the way.

While the film’s title may evoke images of classic Western heroes, Cowboy appears more interested in exploring what happens after the dust settles. According to Raindance’s official description, the story transforms from a crime drama into a redemption tale centered on guilt, second chances, and the difficult path toward personal accountability.

The film stars Nathan Grubbs alongside Alexandra Essoe, Eddie Steeples, Larry Fessenden, and Laura Cayouette. Essoe also serves as an executive producer on the project.

Early reactions suggest Cowboy blends multiple genres, incorporating elements of Western storytelling, romance, and crime drama. One early review described the film as “part action thriller, part Western romance,” praising its performances and its focus on redemption and reinvention.

Visually, the film embraces modern settings while retaining the spirit of classic Western cinema. Raindance notes that highways, cars, and contemporary America replace the traditional frontier, creating what it calls a modern take on a genre that is often overlooked in today’s filmmaking landscape.

The project arrives at Raindance as a nominee for the Discovery Award for Debut Feature, placing it among the festival’s emerging voices to watch.

For audiences drawn to character-driven stories of redemption, Cowboy could become one of the festival’s hidden gems. As Raindance shines a spotlight on independent filmmaking once again, Nathan Grubbs’ debut feature looks poised to bring a distinctly American story of regret, resilience, and second chances to London.

Cowboy will make its UK premiere at the 2026 Raindance Film Festival.
