It was Tuesday afternoon in Orlando, Florida and I was asked to go to a Double feature movie screening. I agreed, but did I see the movie? Have I heard of it? Absolutely not. When you hear the words ‘Velocipastor’, you can’t help to question what you’re about to get into. A dinosaur? a pastor? Are they fighting? No. But it is about a pastor who TURNS into a Velociraptor. You heard me correctly. But hey, first time for everything.
Going into this VelociPastor double feature event in with an open mind and no expectations, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed both films. The campy atmosphere, over the top moments, and well timed humor made for an entertaining experience, and I found myself laughing far more than I anticipated. Gregory James Cohan delivered a performance that struck the perfect balance between cheesy and charming, fitting seamlessly into the films’ unique style. The intentional temporary fonts that popped in and out throughout the film in what seemingly meant to be more serious events, was the icing on the cake. Who doesn’t love a disaster with small humor relief?
While some but not all elements of the story were predictable, that was part of the charm. Both films embrace their ridiculousness and know exactly what kind of experience they want to deliver. I also have to applaud both casts (new and returning) for fully committing to their roles and rolling with the chaos. For lower-budget productions, the films deliver an impressive amount of action, arguably more than some of today’s major box office releases. It may be unpopular opinion, but it is mine.
The second film also caught me completely off guard with an unexpected close-up shot of a penis. The audience, myself included, reacted as if we were all in the room witnessing it firsthand, making it one of the more unforgettable moments of the double feature. With more flirtation, more dinosaurs and little creatures alike, more adventures and flashbacks.
Overall, both films were a pleasant surprise and a reminder that sometimes the most entertaining movies are the ones that don’t take themselves too seriously.
